Gabriel Shumba

Gabriel Shumba is a young human rights lawyer from Zimbabwe who was forced into exile in South Africa in 2003, following repeated death threats from President Robert Mugabe’s regime. His exile came only after he was arrested, assaulted and tortured 14 times for protesting against the breakdown of the rule of law, leading demonstrations against police brutality, denouncing harassment of opposition members of Parliament and defending victims of torture. In 2004, he was invited by the United States Congress to testify before the House Committee on International Relations about his persecution. His testimony helped convince the US government to increase pressure on President Mugabe’s regime. In September 2005, Rights & Democracy invited Mr. Shumba to visit Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal
