Foreign Policy Mingler

Canadian Universities and Foreign Policy: Reflections on the Promotion of Human Rights and Democracy Around the World

March 23-24, 2006
Montreal

The “Mingler” is a national event for the Rights & Democracy Network that brings together our members from across the country to meet and strategize with Rights & Democracy’s President, staff, and members of its Board of Directors. On the occasion of this “Foreign Policy Mingler,” students and professors will also have the chance to dialogue with representatives of Foreign Affairs Canada about the new policy directions, strategies and initiatives contained in the International Policy Statement.

With the support of Foreign Affairs Canada, we will reunite the coordinators or other key members from each of our Rights & Democracy Delegations across Canada on March 23 rd and 24 th in Montreal . This national meeting will provide members of the Network a concrete opportunity to actively participate in policy dialogue and implementation. It will also strengthen their capacity in promoting international human rights and democracy, while reinforcing the dynamic relationships, innovative ideas and common values upon which our network is based.

The first day will serve as a forum for students to discuss the key themes in the Diplomacy chapter of Canada ’s International Policy Statement, including

  1. Fostering the North American partnership;
  2. A Canadian contribution to a more secure world;
  3. A renewed multilateralism; and
  4. Realigning bilateral relationships and building new networks.

This day will therefore serve to deepen the understanding of the members of the Rights & Democracy Network about the links between Canada ’s foreign policy priorities and the promotion of human rights and democracy.

The second day will offer an opportunity to discuss the various projects that the students undertook on their campuses and in their communities during the 2005-2006 academic year. They will draw lessons-learned on effective student mobilization techniques; and, provide input and advice for the activities of the Rights & Democracy Network for the 2006-2007 academic year. In particular, there will be a series of brainstorming sessions for projects and activities that relate to the foreign policy topics discussed the previous day.

On the evening of March 23 rd, there will be a public event at which the student members, faculty resource people, current and potential sponsors and partners will come together with Rights & Democracy’s President, staff, and members of its Board of Directors. This will be an important occasion for further public engagement, drawing attention of the Montreal community about how Canadian youth are concretely engaged in our shared objective to promote international human rights and democracy.
