Launch of the Report of the International Tribunal on Crimes Against Women of Burma

The Nobel Women's Initiative and the Women's League of Burma launched the report for the International Tribunal on Crimes Against Women of Burma.  The Tribunal was a catalyst for action on the situation in Burma.

Three student members of the Network along with Network coordinator Elana Wright and Rights & Democracy's Asia Regional Officer Mika Lévesque attended the Tribunal, which took place in New York on March 2, 2010, as a parallel event during the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women 15-year review of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

The Tribunal featured testimony from twelve women of Burma. The report includes findings and recommendations aimed at the international community, the Burmese regime and civil society.

The report will inform and motivate international action in Burma. The judges at the Tribunal included Nobel Peace Laureates Jody Willams and Shirin Ebadi, along with human rights experts Vitit Muntarbhorn (a previous member of Rights & Democracy's board) and Heisoo Shin.

Network members Saima Butt from the University of Alberta delegation, Miatta Gorvie from the University of Ottawa delegation, and Sakina Masmoudi from the UQAM delegation will be publishing articles and organizing delegation events based on what they learned during the Tribunal.
